Role in Curriculum

Course used by department to establish basic math proficiency in algebra. To pass this class a
student must also establish CUNY proficiency in mathematics either through exemption or the passing
of parts I and II of the COMPASS placement exam

Learning Goals and Assessment Plans

Learning GoalAssessment
The student will understand lines, including
solving linear equations, the concept of slope,
the point-slope formula, and graphing of lines.
When the class is being assessed, the common
final exams will include embedded questions to
assess whether the students have sufficiently
mastered the topic-specific learning goals.
Instructors will be responsible for tallying
their students performance on these questions,
and the developmental math coordinator will
provide an overall summary.
The student will be familiar with basic
operations involving exponents including
polynomials, factoring, rational expressions, and
radicals.

involving percents, ratios and proportions.

When assessment activities are done, the results will be summarized in memorandum form and filed with the department chairperson for record keeping
purposes.

Information obtained from assessment will be used to assess and self-reflect on the success of the course and to make any necessary changes to
improve teaching and learning effectiveness.
