Expectations

This is a course in Statistics with computers. We will cover some basic statistical concepts using the computer as much as possible to do the heavy mathematical lifting. Our job will be to learn what the numbers mean and what they can tell us. As well, we will spend a lot of time using and learning MINTAB to find these numbers.

Data sets can be chosen according to class interests, and you are encouraged to bring in materials for analysis or discussion in the context of what we are currently discussing.

Lectures

The lectures will occur in the classroom and the computer room. As well, you will have time in the computer rooms to do some explorations.

Grading

The grade from this class will be determined by 2 mid-term exams and your final. As well, class participation and computer projects will count.

The dates for the exams will be announced atleast one week prior to their occurrence.

Examination Schedule

You mid-term exams are scheduled for March 14th and May 2nd. They will take place in the computer room. The schedule for the final exam will be announced around April.

Course Web Site

I will keep the course web site current. You will find course announcements here (such as when the tests are) , any documents I create and data sets that I collect from the web. Please make a point of checking it occasionally.

The computer

This class will use the computer as much as possible. We will use the MINITAB software to do our statistical analysis. We will see this is relatively easy to use, and will give us lots of information to learn how to digest.

At times you may be asked to work in teams on computer projects or by yourselves.

Attendance

Attendance for this class is expected and will be recorded. You are allowed no more than 3 missed courses per term.

MINITAB manual

There is a recommended, but optional, manual for MINITAB that accompanies the class text. It is by A. Arnholt, and is titled “MINITAB lab manual for Kitchen’s Exploring Statistics”. It will be available in the book store.
