These are the goals for week 3

The Book

My goal is to finish chapter 3. In reality, this won’t work as we still need to cover a few topic in chapter 2. In particular measures of spread. Last week we touched on the main topics of 2.1-2.4 and bit on 2.6.

Chapter 3 covers bivariate data. As in chapter 2 we will discuss various ways to describe such data: with tables, graphically, numerically summarizing. Relationships between variables will become important.

Minitab

From chapter 2 we need to discuss just the boxplot and we will look a few types of distributions and give words to them. From chapter 3 we will learn to view bivariate data. This is done primarily with a contigency table for categorical data, and scatterplots for numerical data. As well, side-by-side plots such as boxplots can be used to investigate relationships between categorical and numeric variables.

Newspaper assignment

For Wednesday, please bring in some article from the paper where bivariate data is discussed. This can be a graphic or an article. Be prepared to discuss it with the class using any appropriate terminolgy for 2-3 minutes.

HW assignment

This is homework to try after the week’s lectures: From chapter 2, do the homework problems I assigned last week that you couldn’t do because we didn’t finish the chapter. From chapter 3 try 3.2,3.4,3.9,3.12,3.28,3.29,3.43,3.49. If we do not get to section 3.4, we will do those problems next week.
