Statistics is abaout learning from data. This course will provide an introduction to inferential statistics. It will cover exploratory data analysis; some foundational probability; and then takes up the topic of inference. The use of a computer will simplify many computations (though will add its own additional complexity).
We will use Introduction to the Practice of Statistics by Moore, McCabe, and Craig, Ninth edition.
The syllabus is distributed. It can be found online at https://www.math.csi.cuny.edu/Courses/Syllabi/MTH214.pdf
The departmental syllabus is a sketch more than a roadmap. We will move chapters around. (For example, we will discuss Chapter 2 after Chapter 1, not at the end of the term).
There will be two midterms and a final exam. Each exam will carry an equal weight. The exam dates will be: Wednesday, October 2 and Wednesday, October 13. The date of the final exam will be announced during the semester.
There will be no make up exam given without prior approval.
We will try using Webwork for online homework. This is new for this class. If this doesnโt work out, we will substitute with in-class quizzes.
The course will have computer labs that utilize the R software. R is freely available for personal installation. More details will be presented during the term.
