Hi Class, this is a checklist for what we need to know on the first day of iMTH123.

Contact information

You can reach me (John Verzani) by phone (718 982-3623), by my secretaries (phone 718 982 3600), by email at verzani@math.csi.cuny.edu or in person in 1S-224.

Course information.

The course meets online, not in a classroom. It is important to know the course website is found at by clicking on Courses and then iMTH123. The course is intended to be run as week-long units. These start on a Monday with the assignment for the week and end on Friday with the weekly quiz. In between you are expected to read my lecture notes, read the book, try the homework, do any suggested web work, partcipate in the class discussion group and take the quiz. It sounds like alot, but remember, you aren’t in a lecture and you have to make this up.

Tests

Tests are done in the testing center. The exact time of the tests will be announced soon and the online version of this will be updated. The three midterm exams will be taken at the testing center in the 1A building. The tests will have a 2 day “window” to be taken. During this 2 days, you are expected to arrange with the testing center a time to take the 1 1/2 hour exams. The time flexibility is to make it convenient for our different schedules. Your scores will be emailed back to you.

The final will be the common final for MTH123 and will be taken at the common final time. This is usually the first available Thursday during club hours, but is subject to change. The exact time will be announced aroun the 10th week of class.

Assignments

Assignments are posted on the web site at the beginning of each week. We will be following the weekly syllabus found in the Course Documents folder. Each weeks assignment will consist of reading, writing (on the discussion group), web work and homework problems from the book.

Quizzes

Weekly quizzes will be given. You will take these on Friday or over the weekend. They are accessed over the computer. You will need to have a password to take these quizzes. These are available from me.

Discussion Group

Part of this class is the discussion group. You are expected to post atleast 3 posting per week. Failure to do so will count against your participation grade and your attendance. Failure to participate for 2 or more weeks will cause you to be dropped due to lack of attendance.

Grade

You grade will be found by your performance on the 3 mid-terms, the final, your quiz average and your participation grade. The midterms are 18% each, the final 30%, quizzes 10% and participation 8%.

Calculator

The class requires a calculator. This is currently the TI-82. There are some lecture notes for this calculator that the department provides, and that I will give out. For me the real requirement is that you know how to use a graphing calculator by the time you leave this class. I will test on this. If you are familiar with a different graphing calculator other than the TI-82 you may use that one instead. I personally have a Palm pilot that has free graphing calculator software. This is not a bad idea if you want to get a palm pilot.

Now for a checklist for the introductory meeting:
